HERITAGE

A legacy that spans generations, preserving memories and traditions

In addition to being a natural haven, Casa de Calhariz is rich in history, with remnants dating back to the Phoenician and Roman occupations. As you explore the property, you can observe traces of the past, which are an integral part of its unique identity.

STABLE

Purebred Lusitano

The Casa de Calhariz stud is registered with the Purebred Lusitano breed, one of the oldest and most prestigious breeds in the world. Our herd consists of carefully selected horses, aimed at preserving the purity of the bloodline and the unique characteristics that define the Lusitano horse. Known for its combination of strength, agility, and elegance, the Lusitano is the ideal breed for a variety of equestrian disciplines.

The Lusitano breed excels not only in bullfighting, where its skill and agility are unmatched, but also in classical dressage, which requires a deep connection between horse and rider. Moreover, the horses from our stud have excelled in several federated equestrian disciplines, such as dressage, show jumping, driving, and particularly in working equitation – a discipline that showcases the natural skills and intelligence of Lusitano horses in everyday tasks on the farm.

Our commitment to preserving and improving this breed ensures that each horse in our stud is a perfect example of the very best that the Purebred Lusitano has to offer.

After the harvest, the grapes are collected by the company José Maria da Fonseca who produces and bottles the wine “Casa de Calhariz”.

Our wine is exclusively available for purchase at the estate.

Cattle Breeding

At Calhariz you can find several breeds of cattle: pure Mertolengo, pure Charolais, a breed resulting from the crossing of Mertolengo with Charolais, and Angus. The Mertolengo is a native breed of the south of Portugal, which produces meat of excellence and is known for its hardiness and adaptation to Mediterranean ecosystems. The Mertolengo herd of “Casa de Calhariz”, is composed of about 40 cows. The herd is inscribed in the Studbook of Mertolengo breed. In a separate fence there is a herd of Mertolengo cows which are crossed with Charolais bulls. There is also another herd of about 30 pure Charolais cows, which graze in separate fence. More recently, we have began breeding a herd of Angus because of its premium meat quality.

All cattle at “Casa de Calhariz” grazes in sealed fences, with natural pasture where cattle can roam free. The cattle is of recognizably superior quality and their meat a delicacy.
