Gil Vaz da Cunha purchased the land from the heirs of Mestre Joane, a nobleman of the household of the father of King Manuel I. To secure the king\u2019s approval for a longer-lasting concession, he and his family cleared the land and planted vineyards and orchards, ensuring the region\u2019s productivity.[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”20px”][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]In 1504<\/strong>, King Manuel I granted him the ownership of the land for four generations, and D. Gil’s daughter, D. During the 1660s, D. Francisco de Souza (1630\u20131711) made significant alterations to the main house, which dated back to the 15th century, and the current chapel dates from this period. His family, including his brother D. Jo\u00e3o de Souza and his nephew D. The Mertolengo is a native breed of the south of Portugal, which produces meat of excellence and is known for its hardiness and adaptation to Mediterranean ecosystems. The Mertolengo herd of \u201cCasa de Calhariz\u201d, is composed of about 40 cows. The herd is inscribed in the Studbook of Mertolengo breed. In a separate fence there is a herd of Mertolengo cows which are crossed with Charolais bulls. There is also another herd of about 30 pure Charolais cows, which graze in separate fence.
