The cork oak is the most relevant tree, occupying an area of about 180 hectares. The Cork Oak forests with a very high rate of biodiversity, has quite a relevant role in nature’s preservation, of its inhabitants, flora and fauna species.
The Stone Pine is the second most common species in the forest at the Calhariz estate, occupying about 90 hectares. The stone pine has great aesthetic value, making for a very prominent view in the typically Mediterranean forests.
The Pinus Pinaster and the Aleppo Pine, both complete the forested landscape at the estate. These species are used to produce wood. The Pinus Pinaster is the most common native species in Portugal, but at the estate it only exists in small areas. On the other hand, the Aleppo Pine is the typical pine tree that exists on soils occurring on calcareous bedrock, therefore it naturally grows in rock outcrops areas.
At Calhariz, one can see numerous native leafy species, some named after the Ash Tree and others after the “Cerquinho” Oak, two highly important species for nature’s preservation. Being part of “Serra da Arrábida’s” Natural Park, Calhariz harbour’s numerous vegetative shrub formations dominated by the most common species of Arrábida’s flora like, the “lentisco”, mastic, “carrasco”, rosemary, “esteva”, thyme, the arbutus and heather. At Casa de Calhariz’s landscapes, one can distinguish more than 150 native living species.
